INNOVATIVE CULTURAL APPROACHES IN THE PREVENTION OF ELDER ABUSE (ICAPEA)

ICAPEA Project Announcement - March 19, 2010

The elder abuse awareness project was implemented in partnership with the Manitoba Association of Filipino Canadian Teachers of Manitoba, Inc (MAFTI). A federal grant was acquired from the Senior's New Horizon Program under the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development, Canada.

Three workshops were presented to achieve the project goal:  Awareness Campaign in varying media and unique approaches for altering attitudes favorable in preventing abuse for the South East Asian Seniors.

 

Forum on Cultural Similarities - May 29, 2010

—Speakers from differing Southeast Asian Communities spoke about culture and family. The forum explored similarities in culture for the varying groups, concepts related to how culture may help or hinder recognition and management of elder abuse.

Insight gained at the forum included the need to target younger generation for involvement of  elder  abuse awareness programs.

 

 

 

 

Forum on Cultural Barriers and Elder Abuse - August 21, 2010

Two Part Program

1.  Presentation of the original play: Dapit Hapon

2.  Exploration and review concepts of elder abuse including:

  • Financial and Material Abuse
  • Physical and Sexual Abuse
  • Verbal and Emotional Abuse
  • Institutional Abuse

 

 

Servicing and Communicating with Seniors - November 06, 2010

Speakers included:  Police Department, Age and Opportunity, Protection for Persons in Canada, Manitoba Seniors and Healthy Living Secretariat, Partners Seeking Solution with Seniors, Communication Tips sheet was presented by Gemma Dalayoan.

Initial dissemination of project outputs which included:

  • Understanding Filipino Seniors” an original resource book
  • Directory of service providers
  • Tips in Communicating with Filipino Seniors
  • Filipino Community Profile
  • Service providers also had material for senior attendees
